Plumbago, also known as Cape Plumbago, Cape Leadwort, or Sky Flower, is a flowering tropical shrub prized for its clusters of soft blue flowers and relaxed, spreading growth habit. Its unusual blue color creates a beautiful contrast with yellow, burgundy, variegated, and dark-green foliage.

Plant History

Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) is native to South Africa, where it grows naturally in warm, sunny areas. The name “Cape Plumbago” refers to South Africa’s Cape region. The botanical name auriculata means “ear-shaped,” describing the small ear-like structures at the base of its leaves.

French botanist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck formally named the species in 1786. It was later transported internationally as an ornamental plant and became popular in tropical and subtropical gardens.

There is no reliable record identifying the exact year Plumbago first arrived in Orlando. It entered Florida through the ornamental nursery trade and became popular in Central Florida because of its long flowering season, heat tolerance, and adaptability. UF/IFAS classifies blue Plumbago as a non-native but Florida-Friendly landscape plant.

Well-drained soil is essential. Constantly wet conditions can contribute to root and stem rot. New plants should receive consistent watering until their roots become established, after which irrigation can generally be reduced.

Plumbago may lose foliage or experience stem damage during an Orlando freeze. Wait until the danger of frost has passed before pruning cold-damaged growth. Healthy established plants typically produce new growth when temperatures warm.

Inspect new leaves periodically for chilli thrips. Possible symptoms include curled, bronzed, distorted, or stunted new growth.
