Ilex Schilling, also known as Schilling’s Dwarf Yaupon Holly, is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its small dark-green leaves, dense rounded growth, and clean formal appearance. Its fine-textured foliage makes it a popular alternative to traditional boxwood in Florida landscapes.
This durable, low-maintenance shrub performs exceptionally well in Orlando, Windermere, MetroWest, and surrounding Central Florida communities. It is ideal for foundation plantings, low hedges, borders, mass plantings, decorative containers, and formal landscape designs. Ilex Schilling can be maintained as a compact rounded shrub or planted in rows to create a neatly trimmed hedge.
Plant History
Ilex Schilling is a cultivated dwarf form of Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria), an evergreen holly native to Florida and the southeastern United States. Unlike an imported tropical plant, its parent species has grown naturally in Florida for centuries.
Indigenous peoples of the Southeast traditionally used roasted Yaupon leaves to prepare a caffeinated beverage. The plant later became valued for landscaping because of its evergreen foliage, drought tolerance, and adaptability.
According to the University of Florida, Schilling’s Dwarf originated as a nursery-grown cultivar rather than being discovered in the wild. It entered Orlando-area landscapes through Florida’s ornamental nursery industry and became popular for formal hedges and low-maintenance foundation plantings. University of Florida IFAS
