Gold Mound, botanically known as Duranta erecta** ‘Gold Mound’**, is a compact ornamental shrub prized for its brilliant golden-yellow foliage and naturally rounded growth. Its bright leaves create strong year-round color and contrast against green shrubs, tropical plants, decorative rocks, and dark mulch.

Gold Mound performs well in Orlando, Windermere, MetroWest, and surrounding Central Florida communities. It is an excellent choice for landscape borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, entryway accents, and colorful tropical designs.

Plant History

Gold Mound is a cultivated selection of Duranta erecta, a tropical American species traditionally associated with Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Historical plant records indicate that a form of Duranta may once have occurred naturally in South Florida. However, the Duranta commonly cultivated today differs from those historical specimens and is not currently treated as a Florida-native landscape plant by UF/IFAS.

The ‘Gold Mound’ cultivar was selected and propagated by ornamental nurseries for its compact growth and unusually bright foliage. There is no reliable record establishing the exact year it first arrived in Orlando. It became popular in Central Florida through the nursery trade because its golden color provides dependable landscape contrast throughout the long warm season.

Gold Mound Care

  • Botanical name: Duranta erecta ‘Gold Mound’
  • Plant type: Compact tropical shrub
  • Sunlight: Full sun for the brightest golden color; partial shade produces greener or chartreuse foliage
  • Water: Water regularly while establishing; moderately drought tolerant afterward
  • Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil
  • Growth habit: Compact, rounded, and spreading
  • Growth rate: Moderate
  • Typical maintained height: Approximately 2–3 feet
  • Typical spread: Approximately 3–4 feet
  • Spacing: Generally 2–3 feet apart, depending on the desired coverage
  • Maintenance: Trim periodically to maintain a compact shape
  • Cold tolerance: May experience leaf or stem damage during freezing weather
  • Flowers: Primarily grown for foliage; flowering can be limited or inconsistent

Orlando Planting and Cold-Weather Guidance

Gold Mound grows best in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Too much shade can cause its foliage to lose the intense golden color and become more green.

Because Gold Mound is tropical, frost or freezing temperatures can damage its foliage in Orlando. Planting it near a protected wall or in a warm section of the landscape may reduce winter damage. Cold-damaged growth can be pruned after the danger of frost has passed and new spring growth begins.

Avoid constantly wet soil and repeated overhead irrigation. Excessive moisture on the foliage can contribute to fungal problems, including anthracnose and leaf-tip damage.

Safety Information

Duranta plants can produce decorative berries, although Gold Mound is primarily grown for its foliage and may flower or fruit inconsistently. Duranta fruit is considered poisonous if eaten and should be kept away from children and pets.

Plants That Grow Well With Gold Mound

Pair Gold Mound with plants that contrast with its bright yellow foliage:

  • Loropetalum – creates strong contrast with burgundy-purple foliage
  • Ilex Schilling – provides a dark-green evergreen background
  • Viburnum Suspensum – creates a dense green hedge behind it
  • Trinette – adds creamy-white and green variegation
  • Dwarf Ixora – provides red, orange, pink, or yellow flowers
  • Agapanthus – adds blue or white seasonal flowers
  • Blue My Mind – produces low-growing blue flowers
  • Society Garlic – creates a purple-flowering border
  • Foxtail Fern – adds soft green texture
  • Muhly Grass – adds height, movement, and seasonal pink color

For a professionally layered landscape, place Gold Mound in front of dark-green shrubs such as Ilex Schilling or Viburnum Suspensum. The dark background makes its golden foliage appear even brighter.
