Dwarf Mondo Grass

Dwarf Mondo Grass, botanically known as Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’, is an extremely low-growing evergreen groundcover prized for its dense tufts of narrow, dark-green foliage and carpet-like appearance. Its miniature size creates a refined, high-end look without hiding decorative rocks, stepping stones, or nearby landscape plants.

Dwarf Mondo Grass performs well in Orlando, Windermere, MetroWest, and surrounding Central Florida communities. We recommend it for walkway borders, stepping-stone joints, shaded groundcover, rock gardens, courtyards, tree islands, and small decorative planting areas.

Although it resembles miniature turfgrass, Dwarf Mondo Grass is not a true grass. It belongs to the asparagus family and spreads slowly through underground stems.

Plant History

Dwarf Mondo Grass is a compact cultivated variety of Ophiopogon japonicus, a plant native to China, Japan, and Korea. The parent plant has been used in Asian gardens for generations as a low evergreen groundcover beneath trees, beside walkways, and around decorative rocks.

The ‘Nana’ variety was selected for its unusually short foliage and dense, compact growth. The word Nana means dwarf, describing its much smaller size compared with standard Mondo Grass.

Dwarf Mondo Grass eventually entered Florida through the ornamental nursery trade. It became popular in Orlando-area landscapes because its miniature evergreen foliage creates a clean, formal appearance in shaded beds and detailed landscape installations.

Why We Recommend Dwarf Mondo Grass

  • Maintains miniature dark-green foliage throughout the year
  • Creates a dense, carpet-like appearance
  • Performs well in partial shade and full shade
  • Stays considerably shorter than standard Mondo Grass
  • Fits neatly between stepping stones and pavers
  • Requires very little routine trimming
  • Handles normal Central Florida winter conditions
  • Works well in small or detailed landscape areas
  • Creates a formal, high-end appearance
  • Suitable for homes, courtyards, HOAs, and commercial properties

Our Recommended Landscape Uses

  • Walkway and driveway borders
  • Spaces between stepping stones
  • Groundcover beneath trees
  • Rock and Japanese-style gardens
  • Courtyard landscapes
  • Small shaded beds
  • Tree islands
  • Front-of-bed edging
  • Decorative containers
  • Areas surrounding fountains and garden features
  • Low-traffic groundcover areas

Dwarf Mondo Grass Care

  • Botanical name: Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’
  • Plant type: Dwarf evergreen clumping perennial
  • Plant family: Asparagaceae
  • Sunlight: Partial shade to full shade
  • Water: Water consistently while establishing; moderately drought tolerant afterward
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Growth habit: Very low, clumping, and slowly spreading
  • Growth rate: Slow
  • Typical height: Approximately 2–4 inches
  • Typical spread: Approximately 4–8 inches per mature clump
  • Recommended spacing: Approximately 4–6 inches apart for dense coverage
  • Foliage: Narrow, glossy, dark-green leaves
  • Flowers: Tiny white or pale-lilac flowers may occasionally appear
  • Fruit: Flowers may be followed by small dark-blue berries
  • Maintenance: Remove damaged foliage and divide crowded clumps when necessary
  • Cold tolerance: Performs well during normal Central Florida winters

Dwarf Mondo Grass vs. Standard Mondo Grass

Dwarf Mondo Grass is not simply young standard Mondo Grass. It is a separate compact variety that remains much shorter at maturity.

  • Dwarf Mondo Grass height: Approximately 2–4 inches
  • Standard Mondo Grass height: Approximately 6–18 inches
  • Our recommended dwarf spacing: Approximately 4–6 inches apart
  • Our recommended standard spacing: Approximately 6–12 inches apart
  • Dwarf growth rate: Slow
  • Standard growth rate: Slow to moderate

We recommend Dwarf Mondo Grass for smaller, detailed, and more formal installations. Standard Mondo Grass is generally more practical and economical for covering large areas.

Our Orlando Planting Recommendations

We recommend installing Dwarf Mondo Grass in filtered sunlight, morning sun, partial shade, or full shade. Intense Orlando afternoon sunlight can fade or scorch the foliage, especially when soil moisture is inconsistent.

The planting area should be properly cleared of turfgrass, weeds, roots, and debris before installation. Because Dwarf Mondo Grass spreads slowly, controlling weeds before planting is especially important.

For a dense, finished appearance, we normally recommend spacing the plants approximately 4–6 inches apart. Wider spacing can reduce the initial plant cost, but the area will take considerably longer to fill.

New plants should be watered consistently during establishment without leaving the soil saturated. Good drainage is essential because constantly wet soil can cause root or crown problems.

Dwarf Mondo Grass should not be mowed. Individual damaged leaves can be removed by hand, or old foliage can be lightly trimmed near the end of winter before new spring growth appears.

The plant can tolerate occasional light foot contact, but we do not recommend it for areas receiving regular pedestrian traffic. Stepping stones or pavers should be installed through frequently traveled areas.

Pest and Disease Guidance

Dwarf Mondo Grass generally experiences few serious pest problems. Slugs and snails may occasionally damage foliage in moist, heavily shaded locations.

Root or crown problems can develop in poorly drained soil or areas receiving excessive irrigation. We recommend preparing the soil correctly and checking the irrigation coverage before installation.

Safety Information

Dwarf Mondo Grass is intended for ornamental landscaping. Its blue berries and other plant parts should not be treated as edible. Keep berries and freshly removed plant material away from young children and pets that may chew unfamiliar plants.

Our Recommended Companion Plants

We suggest pairing Dwarf Mondo Grass with plants that provide height, color, and contrasting foliage:

  • Trinette – adds creamy-white and green variegated foliage
  • Foxtail Fern – provides upright, feathery texture
  • Podocarpus ‘Pringles Dwarf’ – adds compact evergreen structure
  • Ilex Schilling – creates a formal dark-green background
  • Viburnum Suspensum – provides a taller screening layer
  • Hawaiian Ti – adds burgundy, pink, or red foliage
  • Croton – provides bold tropical color
  • Agapanthus – produces blue or white seasonal flowers
  • Philodendron Xanadu – adds broad, divided foliage
  • Bromeliads – contribute tropical color and architectural form

For a professionally layered landscape, we recommend installing Dwarf Mondo Grass along the front edge of the planting bed. Colorful tropical plants or flowering perennials can be installed behind it, with taller evergreen shrubs forming the background.
