Mondo Grass

Mondo Grass, also known as Monkey Grass or Dwarf Lilyturf, is a clumping evergreen groundcover prized for its narrow, arching, dark-green foliage and neat grass-like appearance. It creates a soft, finished border and performs especially well in shaded areas where traditional lawn grass may struggle.

Mondo Grass performs well in Orlando, Windermere, MetroWest, and surrounding Central Florida communities. It is an excellent choice for landscape borders, shaded groundcover, tree islands, walkway edging, rock gardens, foundation beds, and mass plantings.

Although it resembles ornamental grass, Mondo Grass is not a true grass. It belongs to the asparagus family and spreads gradually through underground stems.

Plant History

Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) is native to China, Japan, and Korea, where it naturally grows in woodland environments and other shaded locations. It has a long history of use in Asian gardens as a groundcover, pathway border, and companion plant beneath trees and larger shrubs.

The genus name Ophiopogon comes from Greek words meaning “snake” and “beard,” referring to the plant’s narrow, flowing foliage. The species name japonicus refers to Japan, where European botanists documented the plant.

Mondo Grass was introduced to the United States through the ornamental nursery trade. There is no reliable record establishing the exact year it first arrived in Orlando. It became popular in Central Florida because its evergreen foliage, compact size, shade tolerance, and cold hardiness make it dependable for residential and commercial landscapes.

Standard Mondo Grass should not be confused with Dwarf Mondo Grass, a much shorter cultivar commonly maintained at approximately 2–4 inches tall.

Orlando Planting and Maintenance Guidance

Mondo Grass performs best in filtered sunlight, partial shade, or full shade. Excessive direct afternoon sunlight can fade or scorch its foliage, particularly when soil moisture is inconsistent.

Prepare the planting area by removing turfgrass and weeds before installation. Space individual clumps according to the desired appearance and budget. Closer spacing creates faster coverage, while wider spacing requires more time for the plants to fill the area.

Water consistently during establishment without leaving the soil saturated. Once established, Mondo Grass generally requires less supplemental irrigation.

Unlike lawn grass, Mondo Grass should not be routinely mowed. Old or damaged foliage can be trimmed near the end of winter before new spring growth emerges. It also does not tolerate heavy or continuous foot traffic, so stepping stones or walkways should be installed through frequently traveled areas.

Pest and Disease Guidance

Mondo Grass generally experiences few serious pest problems. Root rot can occur in soil that remains constantly wet, while slugs or snails may occasionally damage foliage in heavily shaded, moist locations.

Proper drainage, correct irrigation, and adequate plant spacing will help maintain healthy clumps.

Safety Information

Mondo Grass is intended for ornamental landscaping. Its blue berries and other plant parts should not be treated as edible. Keep fallen berries and plant material away from young children and pets that may chew unfamiliar plants.

Plants That Grow Well With Mondo Grass

Pair Mondo Grass with taller plants that contrast with its narrow, dark-green foliage:

  • Trinette – adds creamy-white and green variegated foliage
  • Foxtail Fern – provides upright, feathery texture
  • Podocarpus ‘Pringles Dwarf’ – adds compact evergreen structure
  • Ilex Schilling – creates a formal dark-green background
  • Viburnum Suspensum – provides a taller screening layer
  • Hawaiian Ti – adds burgundy, pink, or red foliage
  • Croton – provides bold tropical color
  • Agapanthus – produces blue or white seasonal flowers
  • Philodendron Xanadu – adds broad, divided foliage
  • Bromeliads – contribute tropical color and architectural form

For a professionally layered landscape, install Mondo Grass along the front edge of a bed. Use medium-height tropical plants or flowering shrubs behind it and taller evergreen plants as the background.
